Hinojosa, a state representative and former Austin school board president, says she is running to help families thrive and give every child a brighter future. On public schools, she would end the STAAR test and similar high-stakes tests, pause the A-F accountability system while seeking a better accountability law, return state-controlled school districts to local communities, end school vouchers and costly vendor contracts, replace the Texas Education Agency commissioner with an educator, and audit and terminate what she calls corrupt vendor contracts to make Texas teacher pay among the highest in the nation; she supports smaller class sizes and cites her role negotiating the 2019 school finance bill. On affordability, she would have the legislature return about $17 billion from the Rainy Day Fund as a one-time $1,500 refund to every household, ban surveillance pricing and grocery price gouging, direct the Public Utility Commission to freeze residential electricity rates until laws ensure data centers and other high-load users pay their own costs, stop private equity firms from buying up housing, ensure quality health care for every child, ban bad-faith insurance denials, and strengthen rural hospitals. On data centers, she calls for an immediate moratorium on new projects until the legislature passes protections giving communities a say, and a special session to end the hyperscale data center tax breaks enacted in 2015, arguing that a temporary moratorium is not enough.
